Find a contractor Speed-Sheets must be used in conjunction with the printed manuals on which each is based, and are not a replacement for full-featured ACCA-approved software. The current, nationally-recognized Manual J8 guides HVAC system designers to use ACCA Manual S Residential Equipment Selection to select equipment that is the right size (see section 10-4). Manual S, Residential Equipment Selection, is the ANSI-recognized, national standard providing clear instruction for interpreting and applying original equipment manufacturers' (OEM) expanded performance data. Manual S instructs designers how to select equipment which meets the application requirements (heating, sensible cooling, and latent cooling) at the design conditions that were used for calculating the loads. Manual S also sets equipment sizing limits, as summarized in Table 1. These sizing limits ensure equipment capacities will keep customers comfortable while preventing the problems associated with equipment over and under sizing which include: health issues associated with excessive humidity, callbacks from comfort complaints, higher building costs (larger equipment is more expensive, more materials are needed, and more labor is used to install it), larger energy consumption, and greater wear and tear on the equipment 1. A modification adopted in the 2009 IRC clarifies an existing requirement for sizing HVAC equipment (change is underlined). For this cooling example, we will select an air conditioner for a home with the following Manual J cooling loads: The sensible load is the heat that is measured by a thermometer or a thermostat. It is heat that you consciously feel. It is the heat you associate with a desert or a dry heat. Latent load is the heat associated with airborne moisture (produces relative humidity as measured by a hygrometer or humidistat). During the cooling process, moisture is extracted from indoor air. High latent heat or high relative humidity feels humid, clammy, or steamy.http://www.eliam.com/images/editor/chevrolet-ssr-manual-transmission.xml

An example is a home that shows a cool temperature on the thermostat but, because of high humidity, still feels uncomfortable. When you walk into this home your initial impression is that it is cool, but then as your body adjusts to the room temperature, you begin to feel sticky, clammy, and uncomfortable. You may even feel warm again. This is why two homes that have the same reading on a thermometer or thermostat can feel very different. Some of these parameters were decided during the system design procedure: Equipment type, location, fuel, etc. However, the design parameters considered now come from the load calculations, Manual S, and the OEM performance data. Unlike heating equipment, the cooling equipment capacity varies with the outdoor conditions. The outdoor (and indoor) design conditions that were used to calculate the cooling load must be used when selecting the equipment.Manual S provides instructions 2 to use the home's sensible heat ratio (SHR) to calculate the target airflow. This target airflow narrows the search for equipment candidates. The home's SHR also indicates whether the air conditioner will need exceptional moisture removal (humid climates) or extra temperature control (hot and dry climates). This airflow rate is only a target; the actual airflow will be based on the OEM expanded performance data. However, the HVAC designer should always select a MATCHED system, a system that is rated by AHRI or certified by the OEM to deliver the specified capacity under the design conditions. Diligent HVAC system designers should examine different product lines and equipment styles when searching for equipment candidates. In addition to package and split systems, there are other low capacity heating and cooling systems which will serve small loads (e.g., ductless mini-split systems, radiant panels, and packaged terminal air conditioners). AHRI Data AHRI produces the standards for rating various heating and cooling equipment.http://lengthening-sldf.com/userfiles/chevrolet-ssr-manual.xml

Manufacturers are responsible for testing and certifying the performance of their heating and cooling equipment to these standards. After equipment is tested in accordance with the appropriate standard, the OEM data is published in AHRI product directories. However, the certification and efficiency data that appears in the product directories should not be used to select the heating and cooling equipment. The test conditions AHRI uses simulate a very small geographic area in the US which restricts the use of this data. Hence, OEM expanded performance data should be used to select the properly sized equipment, and AHRI directories should only be used to compare relative equipment efficiency ratings. However, each format will generally include the same basic information: required airflow through the coil, entering air wet-bulb temperature 4, outdoor temperature, and the equipment's cooling capacities (usually total and sensible capacities). The airflow for this air conditioner (1,050 CFM) is different than the target airflow (952 CFM). Is this difference a problem? No. The goal is to find an air conditioner with the right capacity. The process to determine target airflow provided insight to the sensible and latent cooling capacity relationships that needed to be considered. 1,050 CFM will be subsequently used in the Manual D (Residential Duct Systems) duct sizing calculations 7. These charts provide the data needed to determine how much airflow a blower assembly produces at a given fan speed when pushing air against a certain amount of external static pressure (ESP). Based on the fan speed and the amount of resistance that is external to the unit 8, the chart provides the volume of air the blower assembly can move 9. The XYZ furnace manufacturer produced a blower performance chart (See Figure 6 Fan Performance Data) for the FR 80-036. The furnace delivers 1,050 CFM on low fan speed with an ESP of 0.65 IWC (1,070 CFM at.60 IWC ?C interpolated to 1,050 CFM at 0.65).

However, an HVAC designer should evaluate and be prepared to offer multiple HVAC systems in order to meet different energy efficiency, IAQ, price points, or other needs. The evaluation of the candidates may look like this: The air temperature rise through the furnace depends on the airflow through the heat exchanger. If 1,050 CFM causes the temperature rise to fall outside the desired range then: the equipment may cycle off on safety limits, the furnace could suffer damage, or other unsafe conditions may be created. Fast Air (too little temperature rise): Excessive airflow rate; air moving too quickly may cause condensation in the metal heat exchanger (this produces an acid that can harm or penetrate the heat exchanger.). But, equipment selection and HVAC system design are only ONE of the four pillars to a quality installation. The heating and cooling system may be meticulously designed, but if the equipment is improperly installed, or if the duct system is leaky, then the customer views the contractor as a bungling amateur.Equipment startup creates extreme stress on mechanical components. Manual S ?3-10, page 3-4, Step 2 provides detailed instructions to determine the target airflow used in the equipment selection process. In this case we use the homes sensible cooling requirement in the formula instead of the total cooling capacity. This measurement considers the air's temperature and moisture content. Air volume is measured in Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM). CFM is the amount of air in cubes (one foot by one foot by one foot) which move through a duct in one minute. The XYZ model AC-36 must have 1,050 CFM over indoor air conditioner coil in order to deliver the specified cooling capacity, if the airflow value changes the equipment capacity changes as well. Also a code requirement - IRC ?1601.1, UMC ?601.2 Eternal static pressure (ESP) is the pressure produced by ducts and accessories external to the rated blower assembly.

The OEM provided pressure chart will define accessories that were included (e.g. a filter) and other pertinent information. Ensure you understand all of the items which affect the blower assembly's performance. For more information see ACCA Manual D, section 3. 1,050 CFM at 0.58 IWC is information needed to determine the friction rate for duct sizing In this case we use the furnace's actual capacity in the formula instead of the Manual J heat loss. These sizing limits ensure that equipment capacities meet the minimum needs of occupants while preventing the problems associated with oversizing. The size of the cooling equipment must be based on the same temperature and humidity conditions that were used to calculate the HVAC load calculation. What is Manual S? ACCA Manual S provides specific procedures for selecting HVAC equipment against a set of Manual J loads and design conditions. Manual S uses OEM data and specifies how large or small the selected HVAC equipment capacity can be when compared to the Manual J load calculation. ACCA Manual s residential equipment selection - The 2nd Step in the quality hvac design process Developed by Hank Rutkowski So you are getting ready to replace an old HVAC or perhaps you are building your new dream home. Before making that HVAC purchase or even selecting the installing contractor, there are three important factors to investigate to ensure optimum comfort in your home for many years to come. This webpage addresses the 2nd step - ACCA Manual S HVAC equipment sizing developed by Hank Rutkowski.

Energy Star, LEED and many permit offices require that after the residential HVAC designer has completed the ACCA Manual J load calculation to determine the heating and cooling needs of the home, then the designer needs to size the physical HVAC equipment based on the manufacturer OEM data for the home's specific design conditions. ACCA Manual S is the industry standard for selecting HVAC equipment for comfort. ACCA Manual S HVAC Equipment Selection Process: Manual S ensures YOUR heating and cooling equipment is properly sized and will maintain the required design comfort conditions calculated by ACCA Manual J. Also ACCA Manual S verifies the HVAC has enough blower power to move the required amount of air (CFM) through the duct system. An understanding of how to interpret the manufacturers equipment (OEM) data is essential to correct HVAC sizing. Most HVAC equipment is NOT selected following Manual S calculations. Manufacturer OEM expanded performance data MUST be used to select properly sized HVAC equipment. If your HVAC contractor does not perform a Manual S calculation, there is a good chance that your unit will fail to provide the comfort that a properly sized HVAC will deliver. We often see HVAC inventory clearance advertisements online. What are the odds that the HVAC on clearance matches your home's exact cooling sensible and latent needs much less the tonnage. You may save a little money initially, but you pay for it in comfort and efficiency for the life of the unit. Residential HVAC sizing has a substantial impact on the efficiency and operating costs of the HVAC. During the selection process, make sure your heating and air conditioning can meet the following criteria: MEETS TOTAL HVAC LOAD: The total cooling load is determined by the ACCA Manual J heat gain calculation. The summer heat gain is made up of the sensible load (outdoor temperature vs indoor temperature) and the latent load (humidity).

Cooling equipment capacity shouldn't exceed the total load by more than 15% according to ACCA Manual S. The sensible load is the amount of actual cooling required to maintain a 75 F indoor temperature. The longer the unit operates the more moisture it removes from the air. Less moisture typically makes the home more comfortable. The heating load (heat loss) is determined by the Manual J heat loss calculation. PER ACCA Manual S, furnace size should stay within 140% of the peak heating load requirement. THE BLOWER CAPACITY: CFM (cubic feet per minute) needed to meet the volume of air needed after all the sources of pressure loss, such as duct fittings, filters and other accessories. VIDEOS: What is a Manual S HVAC sizing calculation. The 6 things to consider when selecting HVAC comfort system. Most residential HVAC systems are mediocre. They are either on or off. They can't control where flow goes or provide fresh air. They can't dehumidify on demand to keep your home comfy and healthy. Know what can? Your car. Let's compare, and when you buy a new HVAC system for your house, it will actually have a chance of making your house truly comfortable - no hot or cold spot Watch Nate the House Whisperer’s videos. Does HVAC sizing fall within ACCA Manual s standards. AC cooling equipment should be sized at 95-115% of Design Total Heat Gain, or the next nominal size that is available to satisfy the latent and sensible requirements. Heat pump cooling equipment should be sized at 100-125% of Design Total Heat Gain, or the next nominal size that is available to satisfy the latent and sensible requirements unless a larger size is dictated by the heating equipment selection. Listed Output Heat Capacity must be sized at 100-140% of Design Total Heat Loss, or next nominal size unless a larger size is dictated by the cooling equipment selection.

Sizing HVAC systems using ACCA Manual S for energy efficient air conditioning and heating: AHRI vs OEM Expanded Performance Data: Manufacturers of heating and cooling equipment are responsible for testing and certifying the performance of their products. The Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) produces standards for rating such equipment, but data published in AHRI product directories should not be used. The test conditions simulate 80 F indoor and 95 F outdoor design. AHRI certification data are based on a different set of conditions than the ACCA Manual J indoor design conditions: ACCA Manual J uses 75 F indoor design temperature NOT 80 F. Additionally, 95 F outdoor is a very small geographical location. Minnesota can have an 87 F summer outdoor design temperature while Arizona uses 108 F. Sizing your equipment using an AHRI certificate will NOT work. Cooling equipment must be selected using the OEM data which offers a range of performance at different outdoor and indoor conditions. AHRI data also does not list sensible or latent capacity. What is the recommended CFM and static pressure based on OEM performance data. OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) performance data must be supplied to the HVAC designer. Several items from the Manual S are used in the Manual D duct design. The heating mode looks at the temperature rise requirement (Manual S section 2-6) while the cooling load looks at the air flow (CFM) associated with the selected equipment's capacity (Manual S section 3-11). Why do most permit offices insist on Manual S sizing for your heating and cooling equipment. Because Manual S equipment selection procedures have a proven track record over many decades just like ACCA Manual J. By using proper residential HVAC selection techniques you prevent a n oversized HAVC that cycles on and off continuously resulting in increased utility bills and wear and tear.

Heating and cooling equipment based on properly sized equipment will run better which will save both money and energy. Why select Savoy Engineering Group for your ACCA Manual S calculations.
